     The city of Austin recently replaced the old metal halide light fixtures with energy-efficient LED lighting devices for the parking garage at the City Hall. These LED spot light fixtures use 74 percent less energy than the old lights and produce even better illumination for the 750 parking spaces of the garage 24 hours a day.

     As Austin received a $7.5 million grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the city only had to pay part of the initial costs of the LED lighting replacement project. The 53 watt LED fixtures used to replace the old 175 watt metal halide lights will bring the city a savings of 575,462 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, which means a $46,000 annual savings in electricity costs. In addition, the long life span of LEDs will brings the city more savings in replacement and maintenance costs.

     According to city officials, the newLED light fixtures deliver uniform illumination and help improve vehicular movement and pedestrian safety, and responses from Austin citizens have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic and positive. It is estimated that electricity savings by the LED lighting system is enough to power 48 average homes in Austin.
